Featuring the burning in 1847 of the Phoenix ship, the worst disaster in the history of the Great Lakes. How, after a journey of over four thousand miles, hundreds of sturdy Dutch immigrants, who had gambled everything for religious freedom and a new way of life, ironically lost it just five heartbreaking miles short of their entry into the free world .
Filmed by Sacha Barraud and his brother Tony Barraud this documentary holds high the memory of this human tragedy which took place a few miles at large of the Manitowoc harbour in the state of Wisconsin.

De brand in 1847 van het Phoenix-schip, de ergste ramp in de geschiedenis van de Grote Meren. Hoe, na een reis van meer dan vierduizend mijl, honderden Achterhoekse immigranten die alles hadden opgegeven voor meer religieuze vrijheid en een nieuw bestaan op slechts vijf mijl van hun toegang tot de nieuwe wereld hun leven verloren.
Deze documentaire, gefilmd door Sacha Barraud en zijn broer Tony Barraud, houdt de herinnering hoog aan deze menselijke tragedie die zich een paar mijl verderop in de haven van Manitowoc in de staat Wisconsin afspeelde.
